What K-12 Companies Need to Know About Scholarship granting organizations
Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGO) will move billions toward K-12 scholarships that cover more than tuition, afterschool and instructional programming included. If you haven't been tracking SGOs yet, now's the time. The federal scholarship tax credit written into law last summer lets taxpayers give up to $1,700 to a nonprofit SGO and get that amount back as a tax credit. SGOs then use at least 90% of what they raise to fund K-12 scholarships, and those scholarships can cover more than tuition. After-school and instructional programming both qualify. Some estimates put the potential funding impact in the billions annually, even with modest participation.
