Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) - Theater Based SEL Program

1800-25/26 Theater-Based Social Emotional Education Program

Grade Level: K-8

The California Department of Education's Learning Communities for School Success Program (LCSSP) funds the Promising Learners Project (PLP), a comprehensive 3-year initiative transforming educational experiences for foster and unhoused youth in grades 4-8. This partnership is designed to create transformative theatrical experiences that directly address chronic absenteeism and engagement challenges faced by vulnerable youth populations.

Scope of Work: Contractor will deliver up to 48 comprehensive field trip experiences serving approximately 100 students per trip from participating PLP schools. Each field trip package will include pre-show workshops led by professional teaching artists, theater performances, and coordinated transportation. The program should explicitly address PLP's core goal of reducing chronic absenteeism by creating irresistible learning environments that give foster and unhoused youth compelling reasons to attend school. Through storytelling, improvisation, tableau, pantomime, and targeted social-emotional learning activities, the program will foster a sense of belonging, helping vulnerable youth feel connected to their school community.
